Nashville Loves Food: City House
Another year is almost over, and boy has it gone fast! This is my last blog for the “Nashville Loves Food” series and it showcases Chef Tandy Wilson of City House Restaurant. I love this restaurant and I know many of you in the Nashville area feel the same. When I visited him in August he was in his kitchen prepping for the day ahead and I learned about how he got started in the food industry. The women in Tandy’s family created his love for food at an early age. His mom and grandmother were his key influences growing up. He attended Scottsdale Culinary Institute and went on to work at the world famous restaurant Tra Vigne in St. Helena, California in 2001. He then traveled Italy to explore and learn more about Italian cuisine. When he returned to Nashville in 2005 he spent 2 years at Margot Cafe and Bar. Tandy opened his restaurant “City House” in 2007 in an old brick building that at one time housed Nashville sculptor Alan LeQuire. He has since been a nominee for Best Chef in the Southeast by the James Beard Foundation for many years. Tandy has also been a part of Esquire TV’s “Knife Fight” earlier in 2014.
City House is located at 1222 Fourth Avenue North in the historic Germantown district of Nashville, Tennessee. The food is inventive and fresh with a modern twist. While Tandy uses a few imported ingredients in his food he cooks primarily with local fresh ingredients. He offers cured meats such as salami and hand-cured hams which are a few of his specialities. Tandy calls his food philosophy “Heart and Soul.” His wood-burning brick oven cooked pizzas are my favorite as well as his pasta dishes. You can tell he has studied the authentic Italian cuisine from abroad with the unique flavors his dishes offer! We had a great visit and once again I was reminded of how wonderful Nashville’s food scene is as well as how kind the folks are who work hard doing what they love.
I hope you have enjoyed the “Nashville Loves Food” series this year. I am gearing up for a new year of blogging and still deciding on my topics and direction, I will share something new with you in January!
This assignment was shot for the “Nashville Loves Food” project with Lithographics, Inc., Melissa Corbin and Joe Smith.
